Twin-Screw Extruders Technical Workshop — materials, processes and live testing

22nd May 2025

On May 15, EUR.EX.LAB hosted the first technical workshop dedicated to twin-screw extruders. This one-day event aimed to provide training and discussion opportunities for professionals, technologists and researchers involved in polymer processing.
The initiative provided an insight into the most important aspects of the extrusion process, from the fundamentals to the use of materials and scale-up, as well as emerging technologies.

From extrusion principles to material selection

The day began with an introduction to the fundamentals of extrusion through a detailed analysis of mechanical configurations. The focus was on screw types (co-rotating and counter-rotating) and the operational differences between single-, twin- and multi-screw systems.
The focus then shifted towards key topics, such as properly selecting and processing materials, mixing processes, compounding techniques, masterbatching, and using functional fillers.
The strategic role of additives in modifying and enhancing the chemical, physical, aesthetic and functional properties of polymers was also discussed.
Thanks to the contribution of an expert, there was an in-depth overview on process auxiliaries, modifiers, property extenders, and mineral and natural fillers, analysing their functions and benefits in application.

Sustainability and Innovation: the case of PBAT

The issue of environmental sustainability ran through the whole workshop. In this context, the role of PBAT was explored. PBAT is a biodegradable copolyester that is often used in blends to increase flexibility and toughness in compostable films.

Laboratory tests: from compound to film

In the afternoon, participants attended a hands-on session in which they observed the entire extrusion process in real time, from PBAT-based granule formulation to blown film. The entire production flow was achieved using the X-TWIN S twin-screw extruder and MICROEX BLOWN, our benchtop blown film machine.
The trials were carried out with three main objectives: formulating a semi-transparent bio-based compound, obtaining a blown film and testing the optical and mechanical properties of the final product.
The results were very positive: the tests confirmed good dispersion of the additives and excellent transparency of the film, validating the effectiveness of the formulation and the mechanical configurations adopted.

Next stop: Greenplast 2025

The day provided a valuable opportunity to delve into the potential of twin-screw technology and take a closer look at innovative formulations, increasingly oriented towards environmental sustainability — an approach that we also bring to the exhibition!
We look forward to seeing you at Greenplast in Fiera Milano (Rho) from 27 to 30 May, where you can explore our benchtop solutions, which are designed for R&D, functional testing and micro-production.
